I was SO happy to hear that there would be a Fantastic Beasts audiobook read by Eddie Redmayne. His narration was fun, quirky and delightful. It’s as if the character, Newt Scamander, was written for him. I loved every minute of this audiobook. Eddie reads the book with charm and personality, bringing Rowling’s words to life.

If you’re interested in the fantastic beasts of the Potterverse, you’re going to want to get your hands on this audiobook. The book is read out in alphabetical order. Each entry goes into detail about all the various magical beasts as well as explaining things like why Centaurs are classed as beasts despite their intelligence, why the Golden Snidget has been replaced by the Golden Snitch in Quidditch, and all the different types of dragons.

I thought the sections explaining the Ministry’s way of organising beasts were particularly interesting. I never thought to question how they would classify Merpeople, trolls, giants, werewolves and such, but the explanations provided in this audiobook were extensive, and they made me appreciate the detail Rowling goes into. In addition to this, the book also goes into how dangerous each creature is considered by the ministry.

Fantastic Beasts is by no means a comprehensive guide, as explained in the introduction. There are many other beasts that exist in the Potterverse that have not made it into this book, but, you will find most of those so far exposed by Rowling in all seven Harry Potter books and the Fantastic Beasts movie have been included. I was, however, left curious as to why Dementors were not included and whether or not an Obscurus counts as a magical creature.

A great audiobook for Harry Potter fans.
